Here at We Are Wellness we’re always exploring different combinations of activities to provide fun, interesting and wellbeing based escapes to enjoy on your own or with friends. In our up and coming ‘Make It’ escape (Saturday October 21) we’ve teamed up with Stitch-Up for the perfect combination of physical and mental relaxation. Jen, founder of Stitch-Up explains why she thinks Macrame and yoga are a perfect combination.
Like Yoga, macramé can be very meditative and calming and we knew that they would work well together. I honestly can’t think of a better way to start a macramé class than having just done some yoga! I’ve been teaching Macrame for nearly 3 years now and there is one resounding response that comes from every workshop is that it makes people feel very relaxed and most of the time, people are very much in need of some relaxation so it often pleasantly surprises them when they feel like this. Practictising Macrame and other yarn crafts has always helped me to look after my wellbeing in times of stress and that’s why I am so passionate about creating opportunities for people to learn for themselves.
I also teach Knitting and crochet and although equally meditative and enjoyable to many, Macrame is generally picked up quicker and therefore you can get more instant and neat results because you only need your hands and the yarn instead of learning how to use tools at the same time. So although still a challenge, once you’ve mastered a few basic knots you can make beautiful wall hangings by repeating the same knots and it is this repetition like a lot of yarn crafts that tends to put people in a relaxed and mindful state, only thinking about the knots they are creating and taking them away from life’s stresses. Everyone always leaves feeling proud of their achievement and satisfied with the finished product that they have made with their hands. It means everything to me to see people happy with themselves.
Taking that time out to explore your creativity and look after your mind and body is really important and that’s why we came up with this escape as a little package of wellness right there. I think the combination of morning yoga, nutritious brunch and being creative is perfect to find your balance, which we all need in our often very busy lives.
Hope to see you there!
