Pregnancy Yoga is a healthy thing to do during your pregnancy. So what can yoga do to help you feel great and stay calm during these important 9 months of your life? Read our benefits of pregnancy yoga for a positive change during your pregnancy.
Give your body the support it needs
Your body is always changing, but during pregnancy your body changes are accelerated. Pregnancy Yoga is different to a regular class as it is designed to support these changes in a safe & healthy way to stretch your muscles and strengthen your body and support your growing tummy.
Muscle groups are being toned
Pregnancy Yoga tones your body, especially the pelvic floor, hip & abdominal core muscles for preparation to give birth. A toned muscle has the right balance between length & strength. Building & maintaining muscle tone during pregnancy, particularly with the help of yoga poses can minimise the aches and pains felt during these 9 months. This will also help your body bounce back after delivery.
Preparation for giving birth
Labour and birth can be a frightening experience. Being frightened can tighten you up and this leads to a cycle of fear, tension and pain. Working to connect to your body with Pregnancy Yoga including mindful breathing can really help toward making your body relax.
Get connected with your baby
Coming to our Pregnancy Yoga class will give you some me-time and some baby-time, especially important if you have a busy life with work or kids. As you go forward in your pregnancy your body will have different responses to the yoga poses, this will also be a good indication of how your body is changing. This will also let you bond with your baby, even giving your baby a hug.
Possible relief from common pregnancy complaints
Pregnancy isn’t always easy. There are many side affects such as lower back pain, nausea, insomnia, headaches, shortness of breath, carpal tunnel syndrome. Of course not all symptoms are relieved by practicing Pregnancy Yoga but the dimensional approach to yoga, working on both physical and emotional health can certainly ease some of the physical aspects and relax you to deal with the others. For example by toning and stretching you can help circulate blood throughout your body; the deep breathing not only helps get oxygen to your baby and your muscles, it offers a effective way of dealing with pain and improves relaxation.
Healthy mama, healthy baby
It’s not surprising that research has shown that if you are a healthy mama it is more likely you’ll have a healthy baby. A 2005 study conducted in India and published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that women who regularly practiced yoga during pregnancy were less likely to have preterm labour or to deliver a low-birthweight baby. For the study, which focused on 335 women, one group of pregnant ladies practiced an hour of yoga each day and another group walked for 30 minutes twice a day. Results showed that the group that practiced yoga had babies with better birthweights and were more likely to carry their babies to full term.
